Chapter 16: Thin Walls
Every head at the back table turned to Damian.
The first-years leaned in.
Somebody at the next table stopped chewing.
Damian looked at the key.
Then he picked it up.
Noah's fork stopped halfway to his mouth.
"I'll come and have a look," Damian said. "Tomorrow."
"A look," Brodie said.
"Yeah. A look."
The table laughed, and the noise came back, and Brodie sat down grinning.
Damian put the key in his pocket.
He didn't look across the room at Noah.
Bec put her hand flat on the table next to Noah's.
She didn't say anything.
She didn't have to.
Damian went the next afternoon.
He told Noah in the morning, while he was lacing his brace.
"I'm just going to see it. To keep the peace. If I don't go, it's a whole thing."
"It's already a whole thing."
"Noah. I'm going to look at a house."
Noah went to his shift on the library desk.
He stamped forty orientation packs and smiled at forty first-years.
He didn't check his phone.
He checked it over and over.
When he got back at six Damian was sitting on his bed in 14.
The key wasn't in his hand.
