Chapter 24: My Roommate's Towel
The fence was still shaking.
Behind Damian the ref was blowing his whistle at the empty pitch, waving the captain back.
Damian didn't move.
He had Noah's shirt bunched in his fist.
"You've got about ten seconds," he said. "Then I get booked."
"You'd get booked for this?"
"Time-wasting. Probably. Noah."
Mr Whelan cleared his throat beside Noah.
"Answer the man," he said. "We're one-all."
Noah put his hand over Damian's fist on his shirt.
"Yes," he said.
Damian let go of him and ran.
He ran backwards for the first few steps, still looking at Noah, grinning.
Then he turned around and the ref showed him a yellow card, and the whole Kurrajong side cheered that too.
In the eighty-ninth minute Damian put the ball through for the first-year who'd told him in a corner he was scared too.
The kid scored with his weaker foot and fell over celebrating.
Two-one.
The bedsheet with the green towel on it went up and down the fence.
