Chapter 6: The Pool House
Brodie dropped the bag on Damian's bed.
It landed on his bad foot.
Damian sucked in a breath through his teeth.
"Sorry, mate," Brodie said, not sorry at all.
He looked down at Noah.
"What are you doing on the floor, librarian?"
"I dropped my phone."
"Down the side of his bed?"
"Yeah."
Brodie looked at the phone, which was sitting on Noah's desk across the room.
Then he laughed and turned away.
He stood in the middle of room 14 and sniffed.
"Christ, Skip. It smells like a nursing home in here."
"It's forty degrees," Damian said.
"It's forty-one. It's twenty-two at my place."
Brodie lived in town.
His parents owned the farm machinery dealership on the highway and a big house on the hill behind the golf course.
Everyone on the team had been to his pool.
Noah had heard about it all year through the wall of the common room.
"Mum's done the spare room," Brodie said. "Aircon, ensuite, the lot. She's making a lasagne. You can lie by the pool with your leg up and I'll bring you beers."
He picked up Damian's charger off the desk and wound it around his hand.
"Come on. I'll carry you to the ute."
Damian looked at the charger.
He didn't look at Noah.
Noah's chest went tight.
Of course Damian was going.
There was a pool and a lasagne and his best mate.
Here there was a dead building, a frying pan and Noah.
"Who's been feeding you?" Brodie said. "You've been living on what I left?"
"Noah's been cooking," Damian said.
Brodie turned around.
"Has he."
