"Your mother," Anders said, "asked if I eat enough vegetables."
"That means she likes you," Teddy said.
"She asked it twice."
"That means she loves you."
They were standing in the dark kitchen of the Dinkytown apartment on a Thursday night in February, with their coats still on.
Zack had a late exam, and Maddie had said, quote, "Go away for an hour, and I will wear headphones."
Her door was shut, with a line of yellow underneath it.
Her fan was running.
Teddy dropped his coat on a stool.
"Do you know what I did here in September?"
"I remember." Anders's mouth tilted. "I was there."
"I was so quiet," Teddy said.
"You were remarkable."
"I'm sick of being quiet in this kitchen."
He unbuttoned his shirt, slowly, and laid it over the stool.
Then his jeans, and his shoes, until he stood barefoot on the cold linoleum, naked, with the streetlight through the window across his ribs.
The island was a scarred butcher block counter with a drawer that stuck.
He put both palms on it, and glanced back over his shoulder.
