Chapter 14: Name Your Price
Declan's POV
On Tuesday night I stood on the corner of Alder and Ninth, and she did not know where I was.
It was a week to the day.
The rain had stopped, and the pavement shone under the streetlights.
I had parked the sedan a block off, and I stood by the bus shelter with my hands in my coat.
I had written her twelve pages, and I had not cut anything.
She had the envelope, and I had nothing to do but wait.
At nine ten I stood still for the minute, as I had every night, and nothing came down the road.
At ten past ten a black car slowed at the curb and stopped.
The back window came down.
"Mr. Ferrow," Warner said. "I thought I'd find you here."
He sat in the dark of the seat with one arm along the door.
He looked rested, and I hated him for it.
"I've had a man on this corner since Monday night," he said. "A grey sedan, plate ending four-four-one-seven. Engine running, from nine until daylight. He sends me a clip each morning."
"That's called stalking," I said.
"I know what it's called. Your friends at the paper do, too."
I said nothing.
"Get in," Warner said. "I'll be brief."
"I'll stand."
He shrugged.
"Solveig's forty percent is a nuisance to both of us," he said. "I want a voting proxy, signed Thursday morning before the board sits. You bring me that, and Savannah's father's group hands you Ferrow Freight back. The depots, the trucks, your father's name on the doors. Free and clear."
I felt it in my knees.
