Chapter 15: Locked Out

Solveig's POV

The guard at the Tilden Logistics door stepped in front of me at ten to eight.

I had walked through that lobby for seven years, and I knew his name, and I knew his daughter's name.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Tilden," he said. "You're not on the list."

"Whose list?"

"Mr. Tilden's. He said you're not to go up."

There were thirty people in the lobby with their coffee, dispatchers and drivers and the women from accounts.

They had stopped talking.

"The judge withdrew that order yesterday," I said. "I own forty percent of this building."

"Yes, ma'am. I haven't been told."

"Then call him down."

"He's in the board room. He said not to disturb him."

I stood with my bag on my shoulder and my face hot.

A year ago I would have said I understood, and gone home.

The revolving door turned behind me, and I heard heels on the marble.

"Young man," Bernadette said.

She wore her good navy coat and carried her handbag in front of her.

"Mrs. Tilden," the guard said. "Good morning."

"I am Mrs. Tilden. She is also Mrs. Tilden. Between us we are fifteen percent and forty percent of the company that signs your paychecks." She peered at him over her glasses. "I held your daughter at her christening party. Step aside."
