Chapter 10: In Front of Everyone

My dad turned the TV off.

Nobody said anything in his little living room for a long time.

"That's your card," my dad said finally.

"Yes."

My dad looked at Leon.

"You own the company that card came out of?"

"Fifty-one percent of it."

"Then what are you going to do about it?"

Leon didn't answer him.

He answered me.

"I'm going to tell them," he said. "All of them. In the big room."

"Tell them what?"

"Everything. You. Me. The Thursdays. Why I can't prove the line is yours without it. Why I shouldn't be the one deciding anything about your studio."

My dad's eyebrows went up and stayed up.

"You'll be handing Norma her headline," I said.

"It isn't a headline if I say it first."

"And everyone on thirty-one will know I slept with the owner."

"Everyone on thirty-one will know the owner slept with you," he said. "And lied to you about his name. And let your ex stand up in front of the company with your work. I want them to know that part too."

"Not without me saying yes," I said.

"Not without you saying yes," he agreed.

My dad looked between us.

"I'm going back to the garage," he said. "You two figure out your yes."

I said yes in the car, outside my apartment, with the engine running.

"Thursday," he said. "Nine o'clock. I'll call the all-hands."

"Why Thursday?"

He looked at me sideways.

"You know why."

On Thursday at nine, the big room was packed again.

All sixty-two.

Lyle sat near the screen in a new Halvern quarter-zip.

Norma sat at the end of the front row in her camel coat, gloves in her lap.

Leon stood at the front with no slides.
