Chapter 15: The Preview

"Call him," Leon said.

Norma's thumb stopped over her phone.

"Go on," he said. "He's the company's lawyer. I pay him. Tell him the owner was in the building at three in the morning with a woman he loves, fixing his grandfather's press."

"Fixing," Norma said.

"Among other things."

I made a sound I turned into a cough.

Norma put her phone away.

She walked past us across the dark floor, her heels loud, to the old man's office.

Leon let go of my hand and followed her.

I followed him.

She'd switched on the green lamp. She was already behind the desk, pulling at drawers.

Top right. Top left. The credenza.

Then she reached for the bottom left.

Leon put his hand flat on it.

"Not that one."

"It's my father's desk."

"Those have my name on them."

Norma looked down at his hand. Then up at him.

For one second she looked old and tired.

"He wrote you every year," she said. "He never once wrote me."

Then the second was over.

"Take what you came for," Leon said.

She took a box file from the credenza, the board minutes, and tucked it under her arm.

He locked the bottom left drawer with the little brass key and put the key in his jeans pocket.

Norma walked to the door.

"You have a blue handprint on your back, darling," she said, without turning around. "Do tell the lawyer about the press."

The lawyer called Leon on Monday.

Leon told him the truth.

The lawyer said owning fifty-one percent of a company and dating someone in it wasn't illegal, it was just stupid, and to keep doing what he'd done in the big room.

"Which is what?" I said, when Leon told me.

"Keep saying it out loud before anybody else can."
