Chapter 12: Not Selfish

Britt knelt at the steel door for an hour.

She whispered my name, and she begged and she cried.

Then she stopped, laid her head on the metal and said nothing at all.

I sat on my tiny porch with an egg sandwich going cold in my hand.

The camera on my bedroom shelf had a speaker in it.

I had put it there so I could scare burglars.

I had never planned to use it on her.

I touched the icon.

"Britt."

She jerked upright and looked wildly around the room.

Then she saw the little black lens on the shelf.

"Maeve?" Her voice cracked. "Maeve, is that you? Where are you?"

"Where I've been the whole time."

"Open the door. Please. I haven't eaten since yesterday."

"No."

She flinched.

"I'm your sister!"

"I know exactly what you are."

She grabbed the edge of the shelf and dragged herself closer to the lens.

Her face looked gray and thin in the screen light.

"I was wrong about Declan," she said. "I heard what he said about me. You were right, he doesn't love me. Please, just a little food. One meal."

"You were never hungry for food," I said. "You were hungry for him."

"That isn't fair."

"Isn't it?"

She wiped her face with her wrist.

"You heard me in the hall," she said. "You've been watching. The whole time, you've been watching me."

"Everything."

"Then you know what they've done to me."

"I know what you let them do."

She stared at the lens, breathing hard.

"You stole Amplify," she said, and her voice rose. "You had it first, and you stole it. If you'd shared, none of this would have happened."
