Chapter 17: The Last Winter

The rain was in its last winter when I finally told Finnegan the truth.

Most of it.

After the roof, the building had split in two, and it never closed again.

Declan's family kept the storeroom and the committee seals.

Finnegan kept the stairwell, the generator and the people who trusted him.

My sister kept the old apartment, and a bread line of her own, and a guard who watched her door for the Thorps and not for her.

I kept the speaker on my porch, and a man outside my door who talked to me every night.

He had done it for four years.

That night he sat down against the steel, as always, and I did not say good evening.

"Finnegan," I said. "I'm going to tell you something, and you can leave when I'm done."

"I won't leave."

"You will."

"Try me."

So I told him.

I told him I had died once, and that I knew the day I had died.

I told him my sister had pushed me off the roof of this building the morning the rains stopped, and that I had woken in my own bed five years earlier.

I told him there had been two systems on offer, and that in the first life she had taken Shrink and I had taken Amplify.

I told him this time I had let her choose first, and I had taken the one she would never want.

He did not interrupt me once.

When I finished, the hall was silent.

"So that's what I heard on the first night," he said at last. "Her screaming at your door."

"Yes."

"And you recorded it."

"Three copies."

"Good," he said.
