Chapter 24: Enough
The building held its trial in the lobby three days later, with the doors propped open to the sun.
Nobody called it a trial.
They called it a meeting, and it took four hours.
The Thorps stood in a row in front of the reception desk.
Declan's mother had lost her clipboard, and with it her voice.
The building voted by a show of hands.
She and her husband lost their seats on the committee and the key to the storeroom, and the floor voted them to the pumps and the garden beds for as long as it took to earn their meals.
Declan was voted onto the pump crew with them.
He asked if he could speak.
Three hundred people said no.
They took a vote on my sister last.
She sat on a folding chair with her hands in her lap and a neighbor on each side.
She had not slept.
Her wrist glowed blue again, as it had at the first sunrise after the rain, because her System had woken again.
"It still works," a man said. "Every dawn. She told Finnegan."
"She'd better," said the woman from 3109.
Finnegan stood up at the front.
He and I had been asked to run the committee, and we had not said yes until the building asked twice.
"Here is what we're proposing," he said. "Britt Dunning amplifies food for this building every morning, in this lobby, in front of anyone who wants to watch, for as long as it takes the rest of us to grow what we need."
"And if she refuses?" someone asked.
"Then she doesn't eat," I said.
The room murmured.
It was not cruelty.
