Chapter 16: What It Costs
It rained on Tuesday morning, and Margot was sitting on my front steps.
I saw her from the window when I got back from the hardware store with a new hinge.
She hadn't gone to a hotel or a friend's house.
She had no friends.
She was in her black dress and my grey coat, soaked through, and the cardboard box was in her lap.
She had held it for thirty hours.
I stood at the top of the stairs and watched her through the open door.
"Dot," I said.
"I see her."
"Bring her in."
Dot went down in her apron and came back up with a hand under Margot's elbow.
Margot walked into the loft and stopped on the concrete, dripping.
Her lips were blue.
Her palm had bled through the gauze.
The unit with her face stood by the drafting table and watched without a flicker.
Margot looked at it once and away.
"Put the box down," I said.
"I'd like to hold it a little longer, if that's all right."
