Chapter 17: The Invitation
"I'm going," I said.
It was past midnight, and the cream card lay between us on the drafting table.
Dot had gone home with her toolbox and a look that said she would be back at dawn with a bat.
Margot sat across from me in one of my sweaters with her bandaged hand around a mug.
"He wants you in a room with the press," she said. "He thinks you'll sign on a stage because it's too embarrassing to refuse."
"He thinks I'm still the girl with the box."
"He thinks wrong."
I looked at her.
It was the first time she'd said anything that sounded like a compliment since I'd found her on the steps.
"Tell me the room," I said.
She took a pencil and drew it on the back of the card in six clean strokes.
The glass lobby, the marble floor, a stage at the foot of the mezzanine stairs, a screen sixty feet wide behind it.
"The screen runs off the mezzanine booth," she said. "The booth has a feed from the stage, and the feed has a port."
