Chapter 16: Brynn Recants
Brynn Cecil lived on the third floor of a brick walk-up with a yellow notice taped to her door.
The word on it was EVICTION.
She opened the door on the chain and looked at me with red, swollen eyes.
"Willa."
"Hello, Brynn."
"I didn't think you'd come."
"I got your message."
"Is Kylie with you?"
"No. Finbar is."
Finbar raised one hand from behind me, with the camera down at his side.
Brynn closed the door, slid off the chain and opened it again.
Her apartment held a mattress, a cheap lamp and three boxes of shoes.
She sat on the mattress.
"Rent stopped on the first," she said. "Mrs. Hungerford's bank account froze. I got this on Tuesday."
"For three years she paid it."
"She said it was a favor between friends." Brynn laughed, and it cracked in the middle. "She said friends help friends who help Kylie."
"You told the sergeant you looked up and saw me push."
"I know what I told her."
"Why?"
She wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
"Because Mrs. Hungerford told me to, the morning of the shower. She said Kylie would fall a little, that it was a plan to scare you and make Palmer take your side. She said nobody would be hurt, and that you'd sign some papers and go to a nice clinic for your nerves."
"A nice clinic."
"I thought it was a joke. I thought it was one big joke." Her voice shook. "Then Kylie went off the top of the stairs, and I was standing there with a plate of cake. And I was so scared that I said what I'd practiced."
"You said I put both hands on her back."
