Chapter 17: Women Starting Over
The woman at the ballroom door had a clipboard and a smile made of glass.
"I'm sorry," she said, looking at Roisin's coat, at my boots. "This is a ticketed event."
"Table four," Cal said behind us.
She found it on the list and her smile cracked.
"Mr. Ellery. We didn't think... it's your father's table. Nobody's sat at it in two years."
"Then it's about time."
The luncheon was in a hotel ballroom on the Public Garden, all pale pink linen and peonies flown in from somewhere warm.
Three hundred women in good wool and better jewelry.
A banner over the stage: THE ELLERY FOUNDATION. WOMEN STARTING OVER.
Under it, a slideshow of women in hard hats and hairnets and scrubs, smiling.
Table four was right in front of the podium.
We sat.
The women at table five stared at us over their salads.
One of them leaned over to her friend and said "the janitor" without bothering to lower her voice.
Roisin had her hands folded in her lap.
She'd worn her green dress again.
She said it was the dress she was brave in now.
