Roisin saw her a second after I did.
She stopped in the middle of the waiting room with her clipboard.
Two pregnant women on the pastel chairs looked up, then at each other.
One of them had seen the luncheon.
You could tell by the way her mouth fell open.
"How did you know?" Roisin said.
"I booked your clinic in Newton," Marguerite said. "I know every obstetric practice within ten miles of Dorchester Avenue. I called them all."
"They're not allowed to tell you anything."
"They didn't." She looked at the receptionist. "But she looked at the fish tank when I asked for you."
The receptionist went red.
Roisin handed her clipboard back across the desk.
"What do you want?"
Marguerite stood very straight in her plain gray coat.
Up close, without the makeup, she looked older than fifty-four.
"I'd like to see the baby," she said.
"No."
"Just the screen. From the door. I won't say a word."
"No," I said.
Roisin put a hand on my arm.
She was looking at our mother, head a little on one side.
