Chapter 10: Come Hungry
The second text came on Friday afternoon.
Eight. Come hungry.
Willa read it three times in the blue room, then deleted it, then wished she hadn't.
At eight o'clock the suite door opened before she knocked.
Jasper stood in his shirtsleeves with a dish towel over one shoulder.
Behind him, the table by the window was set for two.
"Sit," he said.
She sat, because she could not think what else to do.
He lifted a silver lid. Steam rose up, and it smelled of rosemary and lemon.
It was lamb, slow-cooked until it fell off the bone, with potatoes browned in the fat.
Her grandmother's lamb.
Willa stared at it.
"The kitchen here makes it for the staff on Sundays," Jasper said. "I had the chef make it for you. I'm told you like to cook."
"Who told you?"
"Your grandfather."
Her fork stopped halfway.
"He talks about you more than you think," Jasper said.
"He talks about me the way you talk about a bill."
"Eat."
She ate. The lamb was nearly right, a little too salty, and she said so, and he looked startled and then laughed.
It was the first time she had heard him laugh. It changed his whole face.
She ate more than she had in a week.
When her plate was empty he poured her a glass of water and sat back.
"Now tell me why you came," he said. "The truth, from the beginning."
Willa put down the glass.
"My grandmother raised me in a cottage on Mill Lane in Prarc Town until I was thirteen," she said. "She taught me to cook there. She died, and I came home to the manor, and nobody there ever once asked me what I wanted."
She said it in a flat, plain voice.
"It was sold for back taxes in April. The man who bought it was going to knock it down for a parking structure. The deadline was the end of the month, and I had eight thousand dollars."
