Chapter 16: The Spare
The engagement party was on Saturday, in the long drawing room at Tarleton Hall.
Forty guests stood under the chandelier with glasses in their hands, and the cook's pastries went round on silver trays.
Willa wore the dark green dress. Jasper wore a charcoal suit and kept one hand at the small of her back all evening.
Every few minutes someone kissed her cheek and told her how lucky she was.
"Smile," Jasper murmured.
"I am smiling."
"You're showing teeth."
She laughed, and three people turned to look at the happy couple.
Her mother sat in a wing chair by the fire, wrapped in a shawl, and watched with wet bright eyes.
Her father stood behind her with a hand on the chair. He looked at the floor.
Nolan had come, alone, and stood at the edge of the room with a glass he did not drink from.
Daphne floated between the guests in pale blue, and everywhere she went people touched her arm.
At nine o'clock Ambrose tapped his stick on the floorboards.
The room fell quiet.
He stood in front of the fireplace, small and straight, and the firelight showed every line in his face.
"My friends," he said. "I have been blessed in my granddaughters."
A murmur of agreement went round the room.
"Daphne is my pride. She married well and she has given me a great-granddaughter." He lifted his glass toward her, and Daphne put a hand to her heart. "She has never given me one hour of worry."
Applause.
"And Willa."
The applause thinned.
"Willa is the spare." Ambrose said it pleasantly, in the voice he used for the weather. "Every family keeps one. You never expect to use it. But a house needs something in the drawer for the day the first one is taken, and I am glad that the day has come at last."
