Chapter 24: No, Nolan
Nolan came to the kitchen at Tarleton Hall at nine the next morning.
He had not slept. It showed in his collar and his hands.
He carried a thick envelope under one arm, and a young woman in a navy suit walked a pace behind him with a briefcase.
The cook was kneading dough at the counter. Willa's mother sat at the scrubbed table with a cup of tea. Her father stood by the window.
Birdie sat on a quilt on the floor, banging a wooden spoon against a saucepan.
Willa stood at the sink with her sleeves rolled up.
Jasper leaned in the doorway to the hall. He had come for breakfast and been given a cup of coffee, and he held it in both hands.
"I'd like to say this in front of everyone," said Nolan. "I don't want to say it where I can be told it didn't happen."
Nobody told him to stop.
"Sit down, Nolan," said Willa's mother, not unkindly.
"I'd rather stand."
He put the envelope on the table.
"The house is Daphne's. All of it, the deed and the contents."
"Why?" said Willa's father.
"Because she's the mother of my child." Nolan's voice was flat. "I signed it over this morning. She can't be turned out, and she won't have to ask anyone for a cent."
He paused.
"I won't live under the same roof with her. I'm moving into a flat on Garrick Street."
"She'll be alone in that house," said the cook.
"She will."
"Good," said the cook, under her breath, and went back to the dough.
Nolan drew a second paper from the envelope and handed it to the young woman, who put it on the table.
"Birdie's trust," he said. "I've moved it out of the firm. Half of everything my father left me, in her name, held till she's twenty-five. The trustee is Willa."
