Chapter 16: The Alley

Mirella's POV

Leandro's hand closed over my mouth in the dark, and for one second I did not know where I was.

"There's a man in the alley with a gun," he said into my ear. "Stay on the floor, away from the window."

Then he was gone, down the back stairs in his bare feet.

I did not stay on the floor.

I pulled on his shirt and found my phone and called the thin old captain with the white mustache.

He answered on the first ring.

"Signora."

"Carroll Gardens. The rowhouse with the lion on the door. Bring everyone you can reach, and bring them now."

"Who is it?"

"Gaetano's firm and Adriano's plates."

"Ten minutes," he said, and hung up.

I went down to the kitchen in time to see the back door fly open.

Leandro was in the yard in his undershirt, and there were three of them.

The one with the pistol raised it, and Leandro caught his wrist and bent it down until the gun hit the bricks.

The other two came at him together.

One had a length of pipe, and it landed across Leandro's back with a sound I felt in my own teeth.

He turned, and put his elbow into that man's face, and the man sat down in the dirt.

The third had a knife.

I saw the blade go across Leandro's side, low on the ribs, and I saw his shirt turn dark.

I walked out onto the back step.

I had no weapon, and I did not need to think about what to say.

"Stop," I said.

They didn't.

"My name is Mirella Roselli," I said, louder. "I'm Don Ugo's granddaughter. As of Sunday night the holding company signs your paychecks, and I sign the holding company."

The man with the knife turned his head.

"Ask the one on the ground," I said. "He drove for Gaetano's firm for six years. He knows the name on the paper."
