Chapter 20: Say It in Daylight

I slept in my old room at my mother's house, in the narrow bed under the window, with my shoes still on.

At one in the morning there was a pebble on the glass.

Then another.

I got up and opened the sash, and Vasco was standing in the dark yard in his good suit with the tie pulled loose, holding my mother's hydrangea in one hand.

He had pulled it up by the roots.

"Go home," I said.

"I will."

"You'll wake my mother."

"Your mother's on the porch," he said. "She told me to come around the back."

I looked down.

On the dark porch below me, in a chair, in her robe, my mother sat with her arms folded.

She didn't wave.

She jerked her chin toward the window.

"You are ridiculous," I said.

"I know."

"Come up the trellis. It'll hold."

He came up the trellis in a three-thousand-dollar suit with the plant in his teeth.

He swung one leg over the sill and stood in my old bedroom, with its single bed and the pencil marks on the doorframe.

His head almost touched the ceiling.

I took the hydrangea out of his mouth and put it on the dresser.

"Forty seconds," I said.

"I know."

"I stood in the middle of that floor in front of everyone. I took off my rings. And you walked past me and talked to my sister."
