Chapter 9: Blessed Sacrament
The first weekend of August, they closed Acushnet Avenue for the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament.
Four days of it, from Thursday night, and the whole North End came out for the grilled linguiça, the sweet bread, the carnival lights and the band.
By then my husband had been sleeping in the bed for five weeks.
He had not said anything about it, and neither had I.
On Saturday afternoon Avó put me in the Sequeira family tent, on a folding chair, in a dress she had chosen.
It was navy, with a collar.
"You will walk behind me in the procession," she said. "Where they can see you."
"I thought the family walked behind the priest."
"The family walks behind the priest. The wife walks behind the grandmother." She gave me her cane to hold and took my arm instead. "Today you are going to be looked at, and you are going to be pleasant, and you are not going to look at your feet."
"Yes, Avó."
"Good."
The procession started at four.
A hundred people, in white and black, carrying a statue of the Virgin on a litter, with the band behind them playing the old marches.
The street was packed on both sides.
I could feel it as we walked, the eyes on the back of my neck, on my collar, on my hands.
"That's her," a woman whispered.
"No, that's the other one."
"The little sister."
"Is it true he almost sent her back?" someone asked.
"Is it true Lidia's coming home?"
I kept my eyes on the statue.
Avó's grip on my arm tightened by a quarter inch.
At the corner of Rodney French, the procession stopped for the priest's blessing, and I felt someone step up beside me on the other side.
I knew who it was before I looked.
