Chapter 17: The Starlite

The mirror over the bed at the Starlite Motel had a crack in one corner, and I loved it with my whole heart.

My mother had pressed sixty dollars into my hand and told us to go be loud somewhere she did not have to hear.

Now the door was locked, the heater rattled under the window, and the neon outside painted the ceiling pink.

I lay on my back on the orange bedspread in nothing but my underwear.

I looked up, and a woman looked down at me with her auburn hair spread across the pillow and her mouth red from kissing.

I had never seen her before.

"That's me," I said.

"That's you." Reuben knelt beside my hip with his shirt already off. "Look at her."

"I look."

"You look like someone who has been waiting for a long time."

I swallowed.

His hands went to the waist of my underwear, and he drew it down my legs slowly, so that I could watch it go.

I watched my own thighs open.

I watched the dark curls and the pink wet flesh beneath.

I made a small sound I would have been ashamed of a month ago.

"Don't hide," he said.

"I'm not."

"You are. You're looking at the ceiling light. Look at the mirror."

I looked.

He lay down between my knees.

I saw the top of his dark head with the gray in it, and his scarred shoulders, and his hands on my hips.

I saw him lower his face.

I felt his mouth, and at the same moment I saw it, and the two things together went through me hard.

"Oh," I said. "Oh my God."

He licked me slowly, and I watched his tongue move.

I watched my own hips lift to meet it.

I watched my face in the glass, with my eyes half shut and my lips apart.

It was the face of a woman I would have wanted.

"Keep your eyes open," he said, against my clit.

"I can't."

"You can. I want you to see what I see."

I kept them open.

He slid a finger into me, and then two, curling them up, and he sucked my clit gently while he worked.

My heels dug into the mattress.

"Reuben. Reuben, I can see it. I can see how much you."
