We met them at the shop, because I wasn't going to hear them out on Winnie's sidewalk.
Lasker Floral smelled of wet stems and cold water, and the new lock on the door was the one the neighbors had bought.
The three investors stood among the buckets.
The navy suit, tired and fifty, held his hat in both hands.
Beside him was the woman with the half-moon glasses, and between them a heavy, white-haired man I had last seen clapping.
"Mrs. Crowe," the woman said. "We're sorry to come without calling."
"You were standing under my best friend's window."
"We didn't want Reuben's people to see us at the Tower."
"What do you want?"
The navy suit looked at the floor.
"Reuben told us the Lakeview money was in escrow," he said. "Locked away. Eighty million dollars of ours, for the foundation and the steel."
"It isn't."
"He moved nineteen of it in September. Quietly. To cover the shortfall in the holding company."
