Chapter 23: One Condition

Two weeks later, on a bright cold Sunday, Alexis was waiting on the bench in the Harbor House garden.

She had a paper bag on her knees.

She wore a plain brown coat and no lipstick.

Maeve had said she could come every Sunday at two, and she had come every Sunday at two.

She had not been late once.

"Hi," Alexis said.

"Hi."

"Dad's asleep. The aide says he ate all his lunch."

"Good."

Maeve sat down at the other end of the bench and left a full cushion of space between them.

Alexis held out the paper bag.

"It's yours."

Maeve opened it.

Inside lay a navy cardigan, folded small, with the sleeve cuffs worn thin.

"The one you borrowed in March," Maeve said.

"The one I told you I lost." Alexis looked at her hands.

"I never lost it. I wore it to the flat that day, and I kept it anyway."

Maeve took the cardigan out and held it in her lap.

It smelled of someone else's laundry soap.

"How's Peg's spare room?"

"She makes me eat breakfast and she checks the dishes." Alexis nearly smiled.

"She says I can stay until I've paid back the bank, and then she'll throw me out personally."

"You got the job."

"The bakery on Dorchester Avenue. Five a.m. starts."

She took a breath.

"The bank didn't press anything. I think it's because I told them all of it before they asked. I'm paying it off a little at a time, and it'll take years."

"Good."

"And Waylon sold his car."
