Chapter 22: Three Days
Thatcher didn't say anything.
He turned the closed box over in his hand and waited.
"You burned the pancakes," I said. "The first morning. In that apartment on Hope Street with the slanted floor. You set off the smoke alarm and stood on a chair in your boxers fanning it with a cookbook."
His mouth twitched.
"The second morning, we didn't get out of bed until two. Your mother called four times. You answered the fourth one and told her we'd died."
"I did not."
"You did. She laughed for five minutes."
He was smiling now, helplessly.
"The third morning," I said, "I woke up first. You were asleep on your stomach with your arm hanging off the bed. I watched you for a while. Then I went down to get croissants."
The smile went.
"I never got back upstairs," I said. "So I never told you. That I'd been happy. That I'd stood there watching you sleep and thought, this is it, this is the whole thing."
My voice gave out.
He put the box on the step and took both my hands.
"Tell me now," he said.
"I'm happy."
"Again."
"I'm happy, Thatcher."
He pressed his mouth to my scarred wrist and held it there.
"Then here are my conditions," I said, when I could.
He laughed into my wrist. "Of course."
"Not the garden. Not two hundred people under a tent. The courthouse. Your parents, and Dena if she's still paying, and whoever else we actually like."
"Done."
"Not yet. Not this year. I want to be nineteen. I want to have a year of school behind me that nobody gave me. I want to have paid for my own dress."
"Done."
"And the apartment on Hope Street."
He stopped.
"Maisie. We don't have to live there."
"I want my corner back," I said. "He doesn't get to keep it."
