Chapter 10: Paddle
"Going twice."
Harriet didn't look up from her knitting.
"Now would be good, dear," she said.
Stuart stood up.
He lifted paddle number 88 over his head.
"One point two billion."
The applause stopped.
Two hundred heads turned around to look at the back row.
The cameras swung with them.
Victor turned last.
His face went through surprise, then disbelief, then a sort of greenish white.
"Is this a joke?" he said loudly. "He drives a delivery truck."
The auctioneer looked down at his papers.
"Paddle 88 has been fully cleared by the court, Mr. Hatcher. The funds are verified."
A murmur went through the room.
Victor turned to the man next to him, a lender, and hissed something.
The lender shook his head.
Victor turned back.
