Chapter 14: North Room
Dad sat down hard in his chair.
He picked up the gravy-soaked paper and read it.
His hands shook so badly the paper rattled.
"Ron?" Mom's voice went high. "Ron, tell me that's not true."
Dad didn't answer.
That was the answer.
"You co-signed?" Mom said. "Without telling me?"
"He said it was for three months!" Dad shouted. "He said it was a sure thing. He's family!"
Trey laughed.
"Nothing's a sure thing, Ron."
Stuart stood up.
He walked around the table to Trey, calmly.
Trey took a step back into the wall.
"You've said what you came to say," Stuart said. "Now leave, or I'll call the police and tell them you broke in."
"You wouldn't."
Stuart took out his phone.
Trey looked at his father.
Victor turned around and walked out without a word.
