Chapter 15: Doorman
Mom stared at me.
I don't think she'd ever heard that word sound like that.
"Abigail," Dad said. "Wait."
I picked up my purse.
Stuart held my coat for me, and I put my arms in the sleeves.
"Thank you for lunch," I said.
We walked down the hall, past the stairs to the north room.
I didn't look up at it.
Outside, the October air was cold and clean.
I got as far as the car before my knees went funny.
Stuart caught me and held on.
"You okay?"
"I don't know," I said into his coat. "I think so. Ask me tomorrow."
Behind us, the front door opened.
Meredith came down the steps in her white dress, with no coat.
She stopped a few feet away from us.
She had the jade bangle in her hand.
"Here," she said.
She held it out to me.
"Grandma said it was yours. I heard her say it. I always knew."
I didn't take it right away.
"Why now?"
Meredith wiped her nose on the back of her hand, like when she was little.
