Chapter 6: Harriet

I read Meredith's text in the elevator.

Then I put the phone back in my pocket.

The guard held the front door open for me.

"For what it's worth, Mrs. Drummond," he said, "your old boss is a coward."

"It's fine," I said. "I have my cactus."

I carried the box to the train.

A man offered me his seat because he thought I was sad.

I took it, because I was tired.

When I got home, Stuart was already there.

He was standing in the middle of the kitchen with his phone in his hand.

"A coworker from your office found me online," he said. "She told me."

"That was nice of her."

He looked at the box in my arms.

At the cactus.

"Abigail, he fired you because of me. Because of that dinner."

"He fired me because Victor told him to."

"Which is because of me."

He set down his phone. His hands weren't steady.

"I'm going to fix this. I'll call someone. I'll find you another..."

"Stuart."

He stopped.

"I filed insurance claims about broken water heaters," I said. "I won't miss it."

"You loved that job."

"I didn't. I just didn't mind it."

I put the cactus on the windowsill.

It looked happier there already.

"Can I ride with you tomorrow? In the van?"

He blinked.

"You want to deliver packages?"

"I want to see what you do all day."

The next morning I sat in the passenger seat of a QuickDrop van with a clipboard on my knees.

It turned out I was very good at it.

I read the addresses. He drove. I ran the small boxes to the doors while he carried the big ones.

We finished his route two hours early.

"You're faster than my old operations team," he said.

"Your old team didn't have a clipboard."

At the last stop he checked the address twice.

It was a stone house on Astor Street with a black door and a brass lion knocker.

He sat with his hands on the wheel.
