Chapter 4: The Brother

I left Ivy with my friend from the office and went back to Mercy General.

I wanted one thing.

I wanted the nurse from the delivery room to tell me, in plain words, what time my sister's bleeding had stopped.

The nurse met me at the elevator on the fourth floor, in street clothes, at the end of her shift.

"I shouldn't talk to you," she said.

"I'm not asking for the chart. I'm asking you what you saw."

She glanced down the hall and lowered her voice.

"She was talking and joking with the resident by half past two. Your husband stayed by her bed the whole time and told us the wife was on her way." She pressed her lips together. "I've worked here nineteen years. I've never seen a husband tell us to hold back the good news."

"Would you say that again, if someone asked you?"

"If someone asked me under oath, yes."

She squeezed my arm and left.

I pressed the button and stood there, shaking a little.

Down the hall, under the long window of the newborn nursery, a man was sitting on the floor.

He was tall, with dark hair going gray at the sides, and he wore a canvas work jacket with oil on the cuff.

He did not look at the babies.

He looked at the name card on the third crib from the left.

HOLLOWAY, BOY.

I walked toward him before I knew I was going to.

He stood up when I got close, and he was a head taller than me.

"You're the sister," he said.

"Who are you?"

"Hamish Rask." His voice was low and flat. "I've been sitting here since Tuesday. They won't let me up to her room."

"Who told you who I was?"

"Hailey keeps photos of you on her page, and the page said she was due this week." He nodded at the window. "I also read the church website. Pflueger and Holloway, Saturday, ten a.m."
