Chapter 9: Two Weddings

Two hundred people turned in their pews to watch me walk down the aisle.

Ivy held my left hand, in a yellow dress with a ribbon at her waist.

Hamish held my right.

Nobody had told the guests there would be two weddings.

I heard the whispers move from pew to pew.

"Is that the wife?"

"Who is the man with her?"

"I thought she was the sister."

At the front, Dalton waited at the rail in a black suit, and Hailey stood at his side in a long white gown.

Her hair was pinned up with pearls.

The pastor's wife held the baby in the front row, and he slept with his mouth open.

Dalton saw us and froze.

Hailey only smiled.

Her eyes went to Hamish's hand in mine, and then to his pocket, where the phone sat.

I did not look at him.

I could feel him beside me, steady, and I held on.

We stopped at the left side of the rail, as I had told the pastor.

The pastor cleared his throat.

"Dearly beloved," he began. "We are gathered here today for two couples."

Somewhere behind us a woman made a small, shocked sound.

I looked straight ahead.

He married my husband and my sister first.

He asked Dalton if he would take Hailey as his wife, and Dalton said, "I do," in a voice that cracked on the second word.

He was looking at me when he said it.

Hailey said her vows in a clear, sweet voice.

She said she had never been so loved.

She said she was grateful to her sister for her grace, and her eyes filled, and half the church sniffled with her.

The pastor pronounced them married in the church's eyes.
