Chapter 12: I Remember the Bowl

Caleb drove me home from his parents' house without saying anything.

I sat in the passenger seat with my hands between my knees.

My father had known.

He had known and let a man's fear of my sister go by, and then he had stood in a dining room and watched me bleed.

Not this time, I reminded myself.

It had not happened this time.

Caleb parked outside my building and came up the stairs with me.

In my kitchen he took the kettle off the stove and filled it, because he knows I need something to do with my hands.

I stood at the counter.

My eyes burned and I could not stop them.

"Josie," he said gently.

"I'm okay."

"You're not."

"I'm fine." My voice went up. "Everything went perfectly. She's exposed, Aunt Gwen has changed sides, the police were there, your father caught her faking. It was a perfect week."

"Josie."

"She cut my throat."

The kettle clicked.

I had not meant to say it. It simply came out.

"At my engagement dinner," I said. "Not this one. The other one, the one before. I brought my fiancé home the night before the party and she smashed a bowl and cut my throat with the edge."

My hands were shaking on the counter.

"I lay on the floor. I said, take me to the hospital. My mother said, she's having an episode. We'll go when she calms down."

I laughed, and it broke in the middle.

"I'm not crazy," I said. "I know how it sounds. I died, and I woke up at that dinner table, and I've been doing this ever since. I couldn't tell anyone. I couldn't tell you. I thought if I said it out loud you'd think..."
