Chapter 4: A Healer's Nose
"Prove it," I said.
Talbot's chin came up. "I don't have to prove it. You know what you did."
"I know exactly what I did. I want it read aloud."
Arlo looked from face to face.
I walked around the table and lifted him off Rowan's lap.
"Alpha," I said to the head of the table, "Tidewatch law lets any mother ask for an exclusion reading of her child, in front of the Alpha, to answer a false claim. I am asking."
The old man's hands tightened on his glass.
"The healer is in the east wing," he said slowly. "Cora, send for her."
Cora was already on her feet. "Thea, you don't have to put the little one through this."
"He won't mind," I said. "It's a sniff."
Nobody laughed.
The healer came in within five minutes, a white-haired woman with a cane and a shawl who had delivered half the pack.
She had delivered me.
She stopped when she saw me and her face did something complicated.
"Thea," she said. "Child."
"Hello. I need an exclusion reading. Only that. Is Talbot Newhall this boy's father, yes or no."
"The patch," said the healer.
"By law it lifts for the Alpha's reading," I said.
I knelt, peeled the tab at Arlo's collar, and felt him wince.
"It stings," he whispered.
"I know. Hold my hand."
The healer bent over him, and the room went silent.
She smelled the crown of his head and the hollow behind his ear, and then she put her wrinkled fingers lightly on his wrist, which is how it's done.
