Chapter 9: The Laundry

Timothy stood in the doorway with his hand on the frame.

"Gwen. It's eight in the morning."

"It's Friday," she said pleasantly. "Your shirts are here."

She held out the garment bag.

He took it without looking at it. His eyes went back to me on the landing, in his shirt, and then to her, and I saw him choose his next sentence.

"Thank you. I'll take it from here."

His phone rang in his trouser pocket.

He looked at the screen and swore under his breath. "That's the Albright lawyers. Give me five minutes."

He went into his study and shut the door.

Gwen stood in the front hall, composed and smiling, and I came the rest of the way down the stairs because there was nowhere else to go.

"I'll make coffee," she said. "You must be tired."

"I can make it."

"Oh, I know where everything is."

She walked into the kitchen ahead of me.

She opened the right cabinet for the mugs without looking and took the good beans from the freezer.

I stood in the doorway with my arms crossed over his shirt and watched her.

"I'm so glad he has someone," Gwen said, scooping. "I mean that. Timothy has never let anyone near him. Do you know we've had dinner every Thursday for six years?"

"I didn't."

"At the lakeshore club. Eight o'clock, his table. It's the only evening he is reliably human." She smiled at the coffee machine. "I'll be there long after this arrangement of yours runs its course, you know. Someone will need to be."

"Who told you it was an arrangement?"

"Eleanor tells me everything."
