Chapter 23: Two Women at One Table
She came to the kitchen door at two, carrying a five-gallon bucket in both hands.
Dirt showed over the rim, and a few broad green leaves.
"I didn't know what to bring," she said. "These were my mother's."
"Hostas?"
"She had them along her fence for forty years. I divided them last night." She looked past me at the table. "I can leave them on the step."
"Come in," I said. "Put them by the sink."
Luke had taken Teddy and Bernice to the creek behind the nursery with a fishing line and strict orders to be gone two hours.
The house was very quiet.
I poured two cups of coffee and set them on my grandmother's tablecloth.
The woman from the depot sat down with her back to the window and wrapped both hands around the cup.
She was shorter than I'd thought in the auditorium.
Her knuckles were rough, and she wore no rings.
"I practiced this in the car," she said. "I got it wrong every time."
"Then say it wrong."
She laughed, once, without pleasure.
"He told me you were cold," she said. "In the first month. He said you'd stopped speaking to him after the baby, and that you stayed because of your grandmother's land. He said he'd ask you for a divorce when the spring thaw came."
"There's no thaw in Georgia."
"I noticed that around the third year."
I turned my cup.
"He told me you made a claim about a child," I said. "On Monday. He said you threatened to tell me, so he paid."
"That's one version."
"I'd like to hear yours."
She looked at the window for a long time.
