Chapter 5: Forty Thousand Views

Luke did not sit down.

He stood in front of the television with his arms folded and watched my own voice say, "This nurse is refusing him antivenom."

On the screen Shelby's face changed, and then it filled the frame, and her hand clawed at the camera.

The video ended on a blur of ceiling tile.

It was a short clip, and it showed a stranger's fury and nothing else.

"There," Shelby said at once. She had stopped crying. "That's her filming me while I try to calm her down. It's cut, Luke. You can see that."

"It starts after," I said.

"After what?"

"After you hit me."

"I never hit you."

She said it with her chin high.

Luke turned his head and looked at me.

I saw how much he wanted her to be telling the truth.

"Show him, Bernice," I said.

My sister had her phone out already.

"I got this at six this morning, from a woman at the pharmacy," Bernice said. "She sat in the waiting room yesterday. Her cousin posted it last night."

She held the phone out to Luke.

He took it.

I did not need to watch it again.

I knew every second.

A slap, then the sound of it, wet and flat.

A woman's voice saying bastard, loud and clear.

A steel clipboard coming down on a mother's head, while she curled herself around a small boy.

The camera was shaking.

Somebody behind it said, "Oh my God, oh my God," and did not move.

Luke watched all of it without breathing.
