Chapter 10: The Lakefront
Basia's POV
The windows of his father's truck were fogged white from the inside.
I was in his lap with my coat open and my mouth on his.
The South Shore lot was empty.
It was the last night of October, nine at night.
A wind off Lake Michigan rocked the cab, and a lake freighter's lights crawled along the black horizon.
The heater ticked.
Karl's hands were under my sweater, spread on my bare back, and he kissed me hard and unhurried.
"You said you wanted to see the lake," he said against my jaw.
"I'm seeing it."
"You haven't looked at it once," he said.
"I'm busy."
I pulled my sweater off and threw it over the dashboard.
I had worn a long dark skirt on purpose.
Under it I wore a pair of tights I had cut a hole in with kitchen scissors at six that evening.
His hand slid up my thigh and found the hole.
He ran his finger along the edge of it, slowly, and I felt him go still.
"You did this on purpose."
"I've been thinking about it all day. I stood at the fryer thinking about it."
"Jesus, Wrobel," he said.
"Don't say Jesus. Say what you want."
I ground down on his lap and felt him, hard and heavy, under me.
He put his hands on my ass and pulled me tighter against him.
I kissed his neck, then his ear, and I scraped my teeth along the shell of it.
"You smell like fry oil and lake," I said.
"You smell like the best thing in Wisconsin."
"That's not saying much."
"I'm saying a lot," he said, and bit my collarbone.
His hands flexed on my thighs.
"I want to put my mouth where you cut the tights."
"Do it."
"You're on my lap," he said.
"Then I'll move."
I climbed off him, awkward in the cramped cab.
I lay back on the bench seat with one knee against the cold window and one foot on the floor.
