The flat was warm and dark, and I led Karl by the hand down the hall to his narrow bed.
I still had the foil-wrapped poppyseed cake in my other hand.
I set it on the nightstand and pushed him down onto the quilt.
"You said a bed," I said.
"I did."
"Take your shirt off and lie back."
He did both.
I stood over him in the light from the hall and pulled my red dress over my head.
I had put it back on in the dining room, and it was creased from the booth.
I dropped it on the floor, and he made a low sound in his throat.
"You're allowed to say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"What you see."
"The most beautiful woman I know," he said, "is standing in my bedroom on Christmas Eve, and she is mine."
I smiled and climbed over him.
I straddled his hips, and his hands came up to my waist and stayed.
He was already hard against me, hot and heavy through his open jeans.
I leaned down and kissed him, slow and deep.
His mouth tasted of the wine from supper and of me.
His hands slid up from my waist to my breasts.
He sat up against the headboard with me in his lap and took one nipple into his mouth.
He sucked slowly, and I held his head and let my eyes fall shut.
"Mine," he murmured against my skin, and moved to the other.
His hand slid down between my legs, and two fingers found me soaked.
He stroked me, slow, with his thumb on my clit and his mouth on my breast.
