Chapter 10: Since the Shoe

I was across the hall and in Ivo's room before I'd decided to go.

He was sitting on the edge of his bed with his own phone, already looking at it.

"Who took this?"

"Someone with a boat and a long lens." He didn't look up. "Probably paid by someone with teeth."

"Zane."

"Who else knew to watch our roof?"

I sat down next to him hard.

"My mom's at the salon at eight. Every woman in that salon reads that site."

"Then tell her first."

"Tell her what? Hi, Mom, I made out with your stepson in a sundress on your roof?"

"That's accurate."

"I hate you."

He looked at me.

Neither of our wrists did anything.

"That's not true," he said, "but it's allowed because it's a figure of speech."

"Shut up."

I went downstairs to tell her.

Her car was already gone.

She'd taken the early shift.

I spent the morning pretending to do invoices at the kitchen island.

At eleven, her car came back up the drive way too fast.

The front door slammed.

Her sandals came down the hall.

She came into the kitchen with her phone held out in front of her.

Augustin was at the stove.

The housekeeper was at the sink.

Neither of them got a chance to leave.

"Is this you?"

"Yes," I said.

She stared at me.

I think she'd been ready for me to say no.

"The girl at the next chair showed me. In front of a client. In front of a woman getting foils."
