"She was fourteen when she came into my life," Zane said through my phone speaker. "Angry. Lost. Her father long gone."
His voice dropped, soft and sorry.
"I gave her structure. I gave her gratitude. I paid for her braces, folks. And now she's in a big house with a man who's using her, and she can't see it."
I wanted to throw the phone out the window.
Ivo took it gently out of my hand and held it so we could both hear.
"So I'm bringing her home. On stage. In front of all of you. September tenth, Ramona. I'll leave a light on, kiddo."
The sunrise chime played.
The episode ended.
"He's saying I'm being groomed," I said. "By you."
"Yes."
"By you. Who I knocked for."
"Twice," Ivo said. "I'll testify."
By nine, it was everywhere.
Zane's people posted old photos.
