Chapter 24: The Night Before

"Wonderful," Zane breathed. "Wear something pretty, Roxy. I'll send a car."

"I'll drive myself," my mother said, and hung up on half a million people.

The grandfather was the first to speak.

"Lady," he said, "you just said yes to the devil on speakerphone."

"Not the devil," Mom said. "I married the devil's retired colleague. That one's a hairdresser's ex-husband."

She turned to me.

I was already shaking my head.

"Mom. You have his name on your wrist."

"I know where it is, baby." She held it up for me. "And now I'll have a dressing room, a backstage pass and a chair ten feet from him when the lights go down."

"He wants you up there so he can use you."

"Then he'll have me right where I can reach him."

Augustin had come to stand behind her.

He put his hand on her shoulder, and she covered it with hers.

Through the rest of that month, the greenhouse never went dark.

Augustin bled every night, and he never complained once.

My mother checked his gauze every morning and kissed the inside of his elbow when she thought I wasn't looking.
