"Show them," I said across the roof of her car. "Show them whatever you want."
Pilar laughed softly.
"You say that now, mija. You'll say something different on stage."
She got in and drove away.
My father's truck followed her out the gate.
Lupe went back up the ladder.
The ironworkers picked up their wrenches.
By noon there were six more joists up, and nobody on that site mentioned the Lexus again.
For five days I didn't see Mateo.
He came to the office. Lupe heard from the office girls.
He did his job. He signed my pour reports with his small neat initials and sent them back without a word.
He didn't come to Sunday menudo.
My father said he had a cold.
Pilar said nothing at all, and ate.
On Monday morning at 6:40 the black pickup was parked outside my site gate.
He was standing beside it in his white hard hat, holding a plastic grocery bag from H-E-B.
He hadn't shaved.
His shirt wasn't pressed.
I had never seen him in an unpressed shirt.
