Chapter 27: The Town
My father stared at the phone.
"She's never seen it?" he said.
"The notary keeps a logbook, Mr. Varela. Every stamp, every signature, every date. There's nothing for July tenth of last year. Not one entry."
The woman paused.
"She says her stamp went missing from her office last summer. She reported it. She works two doors down from your family's lawyer."
My father took his glasses off.
"Ma'am," he said, "I'll come in whenever you want me."
"Monday the twenty-second, at nine. And we'll want to talk to the other two directors of the holding company." Papers moved on her end.
"Mateo Ibarra and Pilar Ibarra Varela."
When he hung up, neither of us said anything for a while.
Then my father laughed.
Not a happy laugh.
A tired, amazed one.
"Two doors down," he said. "Two doors down from the lawyer."
By Tuesday, Laredo knew everything.
The crew group chat had two hundred messages by seven a.m.
Somebody had made a meme of me at the podium in my red dress with the words "SHE SAID IT INTO A MICROPHONE."
Somebody else had made one of Lupe pulling the plug on the laptop, captioned "LOOKOUT."
