Chapter 24: Talk to Me
The second welcome dinner had a hundred and twenty guests, and Gus opened the gate for every one of them.
He wore a new navy jacket with his name stitched on the chest.
He held a walkie-talkie in each hand.
"Lindholm residence," he said into the first.
"Gatehouse," said a flat young voice from the second.
It was Melody, in the gatehouse, on her second night.
"A woman says her husband's car is in the lake," Melody said. "He's fine. She wants to know what to wear."
"Tell her a dress," Gus said.
"I told her a dress," Melody said.
"Good listening, kid," Gus said, and he looked prouder than I had ever seen him.
I stood on the front steps with a shoebox in my arms, and in the shoebox were a hundred and twenty name tags.
I had written every one myself.
I handed them out as the guests came in, and I said each name before I pinned it on.
The rep came in a silver wrap and hugged me for a long time.
Marlene came in her good fleece.
The nurse came with a foil loaf, the hot dog man came without his apron and looked naked, and the girl with the ponytail came with the boy who had stolen my fries.
"I want it noted I returned the fries," I told him.
"You ate a third of them."
"That's custody."
My stepfather greeted everyone at the door.
My mother stood beside him in a plain blue dress, holding a wicker basket, and the very first thing she did was walk it to the table and set it in the middle.
"The bread has arrived," my mother said to the room.
