Chapter 18: The Safe
I peeled the Post-it off my blouse.
"Why the safe?"
"Stock certificates." Lonnie tapped his nose. "Gibbons Hardware still keeps paper, because Myles's daddy didn't trust banks. The notary on gala night needs the certificate numbers typed up clean beforehand. And Myles won't hand them over, because Myles is a sentimental man and that safe was his daddy's."
"Mom has every code in the house."
"Your mama has every code with buttons." He smiled. "That one has a dial. She's been trying birthdays since June. Your birthday. His birthday. The dead wife's birthday. Nothing."
"So you want me to crack it."
"I want you to open it, honey. You hear things. Always did. You'd hear a dime drop in a car wash."
He slid a folded paper across the desk.
It was a list of what to photograph. Front and back. Every certificate.
"Tomorrow night," he said. "Your mama's taking Myles into the city for steak. They'll be gone till eleven. The help goes home at six."
I folded the list into my pocket.
