My Stepbrother's Regret novel · Chapter 31 of 32
Chapter 31: Grand Opening
I stood behind the screen door in his henley with his watch in my fist.
Myles looked at me. Then at his son.
Then out at the lake, politely, the way the detective had looked at the ceiling.
"I thought you'd want to know before the weekend," he said.
"Thank you," I said.
"It was the cheapest thing I've done all summer." He poured himself more coffee from the thermos. "There's also pot roast. Sunday. Six o'clock."
Roarke lowered his mug.
"At the house?"
"At the house. The housekeeper asked me to ask. She says she has a gravy to defend." Myles stood up and tucked the empty thermos under his arm. "Nobody gets thrown out. I'll put it in writing if you like."
"You'd better," I said. "I keep a ledger."
He laughed, the real one, and went down the porch steps to his Mercedes.
Halfway to the car, he turned around.
"And paint that shutter," he said. "Your mother would have hated it."
Dutton Watch Repair opened on a Saturday in the middle of September.
Mags did the door herself.
