Chapter 9: Registered Agent

I slapped my hand over the screen.

Roarke rolled off me and stood up in one motion, yanking his shirt down.

"One sec, Dad."

He looked back at me.

I slid off the far side of the bed and crouched behind it on the rug.

My mother's phone was pressed against my chest, and my shirt was still rucked up under my arms.

I'd never felt so ridiculous in my life.

Roarke opened the door a few inches and put his shoulder in the gap.

"Hey."

"Hey." Myles sounded tired. "I won't keep you."

"It's fine."

There was a long pause.

I could see Myles's slippers under the door, and the edge of his robe.

"What you did out there today," he said. "Your mother would have done that."

Roarke didn't say anything.

"She used to make me apologize to the caddies," Myles said. "Out loud. In front of the foursome. I hated it." He cleared his throat. "The sunburned one says he won't play with me for a month."

"He cheats on the fourteenth."

"He cheats on every hole." Myles laughed a little, and it cracked in the middle. "I'm not saying I'm proud of you. I don't know what I'm saying. Go to bed."

"Dad."

"Hm?"

Roarke's hand tightened on the doorframe.

I watched him decide to say it.

Then I watched him decide not to.

"Night, Dad."

The slippers went away down the hall.

Roarke shut the door and leaned his forehead against it.

"He cheats on the fourteenth?" I said from the floor.
