Chapter 18: No
"What's the name of the place?" I asked.
The aide told me, and hung up before I could thank her.
It was a locked memory unit off Airport Boulevard in Mobile, Alabama, with a fountain out front and a fish tank in the lobby.
At four on Sunday afternoon the lobby was full of families visiting their old people.
Children pressed their noses to the fish tank.
A man in a cardigan was asleep in a wingback chair with a newspaper over his chest.
Russ stood at the front desk in his golf shirt, signing a stack of admission papers with his good hand.
My mother sat in her wheelchair beside him, still in the donated pink cardigan.
Her hair hadn't been brushed.
I came through the glass doors with Andre on one side of me and Laurent on the other.
The two of them had not said a word to each other on the drive over.
Russ saw us in the reflection on the fish tank and turned around smiling.
"Well, look at this," he said. "The whole family."
