Chapter 22: November First

"The owner," Brandi said. "He's going to cheat the man who signs my paycheck?"

"He owes the cage six hundred thousand," Laurent said. "If he wins it off the owner at the table, the markers go away."

"Then let him try," I said. "In front of everybody."

At nine o'clock on Saturday night I stood behind the dealer's spot in the salon with my badge on my vest.

Every man Russ owed was at the table.

The Houston man had his white hat on the felt.

The car dealer from Mobile sat on my right, and the man from April sat beside him.

Andre sat on Russ's left.

Across from me sat the Sandpiper's owner, a small bald man of seventy with a glass of milk.

Russ leaned back in his chair.

Andre slid the soft blue deck across the felt to him.

Russ handed it to me.

"Deal, sugar."

I dealt.

For an hour Russ touched his ear and his glass, and Andre did the opposite every time.

Russ's smile got tighter with every hand Andre didn't play.

At ten fifteen Russ looked at the owner's two cards from across the table for a long time.
